School History
Maywood Academy High School is one of five high schools in Local District 6 of the Los Angeles Unified School District. The district’s original plan was to open the school (then Southeast Learning Center) in the fall of 2005, with grades 9 – 11, at a newly constructed campus located in Maywood, California. Unfortunately, due to delays in construction, the campus at 6125 Pine Avenue was not ready and instead, we opened our new school in at a temporary location in South Gate, with 550 ninth and tenth grade students utilizing district-assigned school buses for daily transportation.

In September 2006, the newly re-named Maywood Academy High School (MAHS) opened at its permanent location and on October 4, 2006, the norm day population was 1121 total students: 695 ninth graders, 314 tenth graders, and 112 eleventh grade students. In September 2007, Maywood Academy met its capacity of approximately 1330 ninth through twelfth grade students, on a traditional September through June calendar. The opening of this new school has alleviated the need to bus students from overcrowded Bell and Huntington Park High Schools, and as a result, all high school students who reside in the cities of Bell, Huntington Park and Maywood are able to attend a neighborhood school, respectively.

The school was not assigned geographic boundaries because the site does not contain football, track and field, or tennis facilities. Maywood Academy High School has an “enrollment by application” policy. Any student who lives in either the Bell or Huntington Park demographic areas may apply to attend MAHS. Information and applications are mailed to all 8th grade students at Nimitz, Gage, and Ellen Ochoa middle schools. Maywood accepts approximately 300 ninth grade students annually.  In June 2008, Maywood Academy had its first graduating class.
